Each step in this Builder Track contains three sub-steps providing a scaffold on which to create your Leadership Pathway:
Step Objective: This defines the “why” and the objective of the step.
Team Discussion: This point provides content and ideas your team can use to develop your Leadership Pathway. Time to discuss and collaborate!
Pathway Stepping Stone: This final point provides room for your team to create a stepping stone upon which all leaders will walk. Use the downloaded book to record your final thoughts. This stepping stone is a concise agreed upon statement that will be incorporated into your leadership pathway. At the conclusion of this book, you will have a clearly defined pathway based on all six steps.
You will also have the opportunity to send LeaderSource your final 6-Step Leadership Pathway and we will create your on customized workbook you will use as a handout for all leadership training.
It is vital you create a Leadership Pathway for your church because your potential leaders may have incredible positivity, energy and knowledge, but they will not lead in the way you want them if you don’t have a map showing the way. A great mountaineer can conquer any mountain, but if he is climbing a mountain with the wrong map he will never reach the top -- the map and the mountain must match.
OBJECTIVE:
Define leadership in the context of your church.
Words are important. The definition of those words are equally important. We live in a world where words are thrown around carelessly with little thought or understanding. Because your church and culture is unique, take time to consider a definition of leadership that fits you, then identify those in your church you believe have it in them to fit that definition.
The following are leadership styles that will help to define the word leader.
Charismatic
Servant
Transformational
Transactional
Strategic
Situational
And the list goes on and on.
While each leader in your church will exhibit various strengths, abilities and styles, the key qualities of a leader you desire in your church must be identified, clarified and written into the DNA of your culture.
TEAM DISCUSSION:
Create your definition of a leader
Remember, this sub-step is intended as content your team can use to collaborate as you create your Pathway Stepping Stone.
Here are leadership definitions you can use as a jumping off point:
Leadership, at its most fundamental level, is acting and speaking in a way that shows people where to go, why they should go, and how to get there. In the context of the church, what makes this godly or biblical? In other words, how does this definition change as we apply it to church leadership?
According to Bill Lawrence, president of Leader Formation International, at Bible.org, “leadership is the act of influencing/serving others out of Christ’s interests in their lives so they accomplish God’s purposes for and through them.”
John Piper says, “...what makes that (leadership) Christian or godly or biblical, it seems, is first that the goal is defined by Scripture. You want to take people, move people toward godliness, toward worship, toward honoring Jesus, toward loving people.” 1
Take time with your core leaders to break this down into three parts:
WHERE SHOULD PEOPLE GO? In other words, where are you leading people?
WHY SHOULD THEY GO THERE? This is urgency and belief.
HOW SHOULD THEY GET THERE? This is process.
Next, consider the characteristics your leaders should begin to build into their daily practice. Define each key characteristic you believe to be essential. Here are some suggestions to get things started.
Listener (define) What does it mean to listen? Take a “learner stance” rather than a “point-making stance.” Remove all distractions and make sure who you are listening to truly believes you are listening with intent to understand. Expound on these thoughts…
Multiplier (define) Are your leaders multiplying other’s skills, belief, value etc…
