Step 2: The Non-negotiables Every Leader Must Possess

OBJECTIVE:
Create a Set of Non-negotiables.

Non-negotiables are those intrinsic values that will never be compromised, even if it means having hard conversations and making difficult decisions. Non-negotiables are absolutes. Knowing who you are, and knowing who you are not, gives you a shared foundation leaders can return to in the midst of conflict or decision making.

In healthy churches, there is a clear and unified belief system that is prayerfully crafted after significant time in discussion and input from all leadership members. At some point debate is over because church leadership accepts and agrees on these non-negotiables.

No enterprise can become or remain truly great without a core set of principles to preserve, to build upon, to serve as an anchor, to provide guidance in the face of an ever-changing world.
— Collins in the intro to 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

TEAM DISCUSSION:

The power of team decisions is they are not a mandate from the top of the org chart. When everyone has input, everyone is stronger because of clarity and agreed upon values. Use the following areas to help drive your set of leadership non-negotiables. This is by no means an exhaustive list but a starting point. Whatever you decide on, make sure you have 100% buy-in before moving on. This discussion would be great for a leadership weekend.

  1. Spiritual Discipline (what level of consistent spiritual discipline will you require of all leaders. Prayer, devotion, fasting?)

  2. Character of a Leader (honesty, respect...?)

  3. Time Management/Accountability

  4. How We Serve

  5. How We Honor

  6. Vision

  7. Other Add anything else you believe to be vital to your list of non-negotiables.

PATHWAY STEPPING STONE 2: In your workbook make a final list of your non-negotiables.
